“Welcome to the ranch.”

That is how Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th President of the United States of America, used to greet visitors to his Texas Hill Country ranch. We want riders in the 3rd Annual LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour to feel the same warm welcome and sense of presidential history as those who came before them.

An exciting new addition to the 2010 LBJ 100 is the use of four historic Gillespie County rural schools as rest stops. What better way to honor Lyndon B. Johnson, the thirty-sixth President of the United States, widely acknowledged as the “Education President”! His progressive education bills and many of his “Great Society” legislation programs were designed in the tranquility of his ranch.

After the ride, enjoy the sites and activities in the Pedernales River Valley. Tour the recently-opened Texas White House on the LBJ Ranch. The Sauer-Beckmann farmstead on the LBJ State Park just across the river portrays farm life in the late 1800’s. In Johnson City, visit the LBJ boyhood home and museum at the LBJ National Historical Park Visitor Center. In Fredericksburg, the many shops, restaurants, the Museum of the Pacific War and Nimitz Gallery are among the diverse attractions.

The tour is sponsored by the Friends of LBJ National Historical Park, the Hill Country Bicycle Touring Club, the National Park Service, and the Western National Parks Association. All net proceeds from the tour will go to the betterment of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park.

Rest stops are located at very scenic locations.  One is on the shore of Stillhouse Hollow Lake.  Another is at the Overlook Park on top of  Stillhouse Hollow Dam.  One of the most scenic and serene settings is at the old Summer’s Mill.   Bring a camera…you’ll be glad you did!!  Rest stops are placed further apart in the first half of the routes and closer together in the back half to aid the rider’s progress more effectively.  On the longer routes the BIG hills are in the first half of the route.   On the longer routes you’ll likely have a tailwind for the last 15 miles coming back in to Salado! Did we mention that most of that 15 miles is downhill??

History: Bikin’ Mike Keel started Tour Dallas because he wanted to encourage people to get up and get active. As the producer of Tour Dallas, Fun Bikin’ Enterprises pays the $100,000+ costs associated with the event. As a native Dallasite who was heavily influenced by his grandmother, Bikin’ Mike believes that he should give back to the community – so with every event he produces, Bikin’ Mike gives back at least 10% of his earnings after expenses.

BenefitsTour Dallas provides an opportunity for individuals and families to be active together. This may not seem like much, but in the battle against obesity, research has shown time and again that eating right and being active are the two principle keys to better health. By participating in Tour Dallas with your family, you are showing them that you believe in being active and staying healthy.

More FUN at the Finish Line Celebration

Who’s first? Who cares! This is a TOUR — not a race. No need to get in a hurry and raise the stress levels or miss out on the fun along the way. Plus, with the number of cyclists in our event and the hazards of the roadway, going too fast can cause injury to you and others around you. So relax and enjoy the ride. Then when you get to the Finish Line Celebration, enjoy the fresh, hot pizza from Pizza Patron, a cold bottle of Dasani water and enjoy the day.

What about after the ride?

We’ll have a Finish Line Celebration on City Hall Plaza, so stick around and check out the fun. We’ll have cyclists, face painters, jugglers and clowns, FREE hot pizza from Pizza Patron, beverages, information about area rides and more.

Route Details and Elevation:

About the Tour: If you’ve been led to believe that all of the Lone Star State is pancake flat, this week-long bike tour through the rolling Texas Hill Country will dash away that notion. This cycling adventure begins and ends in Austin, the Live Music Capital of the World, and long-time training ground of a certain multi-time Tour de France champion. With an intimate group of approximately 40 riders, we’ll make our way on quiet farm and ranch roads through this region of Texas celebrated for its dazzling displays of spring wildflowers – most notably bluebonnets – which grow so thick they sometimes appear to be distant lakes on the horizon. We’ll visit historic settlements including Blanco, Luckenbach, Fredericksburg, and Johnson City, and parallel crystal-clear streams, surmount oak-covered hills, and camp beside rivers with names that evoke the old Southwest (e.g., Guadalupe and Pedernales). Along the way, German-style biergartens, Texas barbecue, and Tex-Mex specialties will tempt our taste buds. And, we’ll surely succumb to that temptation on a regular basis on this, one of our most popular trips.

About the Race:

The West was never Wilder – welcome to Hammerfest! Race the “Texas Alps” one of the most challenging courses in the Southwest. Stage one will start the climbing with a short, intense road stage. There are 10 miles to warm up, THEN 6 miles of real climbing (up to 17% grades) — enjoy!!! We will start in Fort Davis, Texas on Hwy 118 and climb our way to the top of Mt. Locke – location of McDonald Observatory. Stage two will also begin in Ft. Davis on Saturday Afternoon — a 16 mile out & back time trial on fast, “flat”, straight roads. Stage three on Sunday morning, April 5th, will start at the Prude Ranch and wind through the mountains of the Scenic Loop. The altitude goes from 5000′ to over 6500′ and climbs are steep and numerous. The 74 mile route will have a neutral start through Ft. Davis then race around the loop to “Heartbreak Hill”. The 34 mile route will be an out and back from the Prude Ranch to Madera Canyon and back to “Heartbreak Hill” (a lot of climbing). The 16 mile race will start in Madera Canyon and race to “Heartbreak Hill”. And the 56 mile route will race from the “Point of Rocks” around the remainder of the loop and finish at “Heartbreak Hill”.
