The Warrior 100k – bike ride in the Big Bend, Texas area

Warrior 100k Ride

On April 25-27, 2011, fourteen servicemen and women wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan will join President George W. Bush for a 100 kilometer mountain bike ride in the Big Bend. As part of the George W. Bush Presidential Center’s Social Enterprise Initiative, the W100 will highlight the bravery and physical strength of the warriors wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan, as well as those organizations that have made continuing commitments to supporting America’s heroes.

The three day event will provide an opportunity for military support organizations to highlight their good work and has been sponsored by several companies and individuals that have generously contributed their time and resources to support America’s servicemen and women.

Who are the Wheelbrothers?

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxTNVS_-5N4]

It all started in the summer of 2004 when a soccer player with the name of Rainer, convinced several of his teammates, that the idea of riding in a 100 mile bicycle race, called ‘Hotter n Hell 100′ three weeks later, sounded like a great idea. Not knowing what they were in for, 3 of his friends signed up. The rest as they say, is history…

Over the years, they learned a lot about the sport ‘cycling’ and made a bunch of new friends. The term ‘wheelbrothers’ was coined by Jed, one of the original 4 riders and it stuck with the group. Shortly thereafter a website was born, which the group used to communicate about upcoming rides, ride reports etc..

As the number of ‘Wheelbrothers’ grew, so did the website. Eventually, team uniforms were designed/ordered and Hotter n Hell 2010 saw over 20 riders wear the ‘Wheelbrothers’ logo.

We love the sport for the exercise and challenges, it provides but most of all, the camaraderie that comes along with it. Who knew cycling could be so technical, demanding and fun?

We searched on the web for the latest bicycle ride information and had a hard time finding up to date, correct information.  So, we took matters in our own hands and decided to serve the cycling community, that has given us so much, by collecting and publishing all of this information here on the Wheelbrother website.

A group of us rides mostly Saturday and or Sunday mornings, leaving in North Arlington close to River Legacy Park for a trip through/around DFW Airport. If you feel like coming along, ping us through the contact us form which goes straight into Dieter’s email.

We don’t take ourselves to serious, so feel free to come ride with us anytime or simply stop by to say ‘Hello’!

The Wheelbrothers had a great time at this years ‘Ride for Heroes’!  Unlike the last several years,  the weather finally cooperated.  Due to some family issues,  we could only do the 44 mile route this year but we’ll be back for more next year.

Thank you, to all the folks that make this wonderful race happen!

Pedal Power Wildflower Ride 2011 – Ride Report

Here is a great ride report from Alice about last weeks bicycle ride in Stonewall Texas.  Please feel free to send us yours, so others can benefit from your experience!

Wow! What a ride, the Pedal Power Wildflower is a Great Ride!

Pedal Power Wildflower Ride 2011
View taken during the ride

This ride offers challenging hills yet plenty of flats and of course down hill time too. The open Texas landscape was breathtaking as well the day to enjoy it.  Having ridden for about a year, I am still exploring all the rides and weighing the pros and cons. I have found that each ride has both, the only drawback on this ride for me, was the crossing of cattle-guards which at first was a bit scary, but after the first few I was fine.

Alice's friend Patty finishing her first ride! Well done, Patty!

The support on the ride was also most excellent, always checking on the riders. Reststops were stocked with plenty of refreshing foods, water and Gatorade. One other thing that also impressed me, was the signing out and back in on the ride, to ensure that no rider was left on the course. I also dragged along a friend who had never done a ride.  We both did the 24 mile and have agreed that it was a Memorable experience. She is hooked and now actively looking for her own bike. I have told many others about this ride and we are sure to be back next year.

Arlington’s Hike and Bike System Master Plan – Second Town Hall Meeting

Bike Friendly Arlington logoThe friendly folks of Bike Friendly Arlington sent us the following:

Now More Than Ever, We Need Your Support at the Second Town Hall Meeting this Thursday evening, March 31st, 6:30PM.

Thank you for the tremendous turnout for Tuesday’s Town Hall Meeting.  Seeing all the yellow shirts in the audience showed that our community wants real transportation choices for the future. If you missed the meeting here’s what we blogged about it.

However, we can’t stop now–the opposition just stated in a newsletter today that they are trying to rally and come out in full force for the second Town Hall Meeting being held this Thursday.

We’ve outnumbered them at these meetings and we need to continue to demonstrate to Council that support for these transportation plans is solid.

Town Hall Meeting 2
Bob Duncan Center 2800 S. Center St.
Arlington, TX
Thursday, March 31st
6:30 PM

Come to the meeting and get a “I support the Hike & Bike Plan” t-shirt
You will be among friends and fellow supporters.  We have strength in our numbers. You don’t have to speak, but we encourage you to. It can be as simple as “My name is ___________ and I support the Hike & Bike plan.”  There will be a line of us waiting behind the microphone to do just that.

Even if you don’t speak, we’d appreciate you signing a sheet showing your approval of the Hike & Bike Plan, which we can then submit to council members that evening.

And if you haven’t done so already, “Like” us on Facebook! so you can get updates in your Facebook Newsfeed.

Arlington’s Hike and Bike System Master Plan – Town Hall Meeting One and Two

Hike and Bike Master Plan Town Hall Meeting One

The friendly folks of Bike Friendly Arlington sent us the following:

On-Street Facilities at Risk–Please Attend Town Hall Meetings

Thank you everyone for your support of Arlington’s proposed Hike & Bike/Thoroughfare Development plans. The Mayor has formed a subcommittee to study these plans, consisting of council members Robert Shepard (Chair), James Bennett, and Kathryn Wilemon.

They have had two meetings already and will make a recommendation to the rest of the City Council on whether to approve, change, or reject the plans.

At this point, there is serious risk that only a “skeleton” plan will be considered by City Council that focuses mainly on connecting parks and off-street trails. They are concerned about how safe on-street bicycle facilities are, even though there is substantial research showing “safety in numbers,” that is, as the number of bicyclists and walkers increases, the rate of collisions between cars and bikes or pedestrians decreases.  Bike and pedestrian street improvements can make bikers and walkers more visible to motorists and also calm traffic speeds.

While we all love off-street trails and connections to them, they are simply not enough. Arlington needs biking and walking connections to work, school, entertainment, and shopping destinations, not just parks.  Arlington needs transportation choices to stay competitive with other cities and to cope with high gas prices!

Town Halls This Week

Two town hall meetings are scheduled this week and City Council members will be there to answer people’s questions and listen to concerns. We must be there in large numbers to voice our support for the original plans (not just “skeletons” of plans) or else the meetings will be overrun with opposition. Please try to make it out to these meetings, and tell your friends!  Wear a yellow shirt or other yellow article of clothing.

Bamboo Bike – The Green Bike

Last time we posted an article about a bicycle that cleans and purifies water, the Cycloclean (click here to read the full article). Here comes another ‘green twist’ in bicycles. Introducing the BamBike or the Bamboo bike made of bamboo that makes the bike lighter and according to its creator Bryan McClelland, sturdy just like a regular bike. Though bicycles are pretty much greener in terms of emissions, the BamBike reduces pollutions from the production of bicycles. The Bambike’s frame is made from local bamboo from the Philippines, and strengthened in the joints by wrapping it with Manila Hemp.

How can you make a green form of transportation even greener? Bryan McClelland may have the answer: bamboo bikes.

McClelland has created the BamBike, a bicycle made out of bamboo. The bicycles are made in Manila, Phillipines, which Reuters reports is one of the most polluted capitals in the world. The bikes, costing around $500, are built by local skilled laborers, and the company advertises that as “a company that is interested in helping out people and the planet,” their bicycles are made with fair-trade labor.
